Current team


Luis Cásedas | Luis completed an MSc in Neuroscience and Cognition at Utrecht University and obtained his PhD at the University of Granada under the supervision of Juan Lupiáñez, with short stays at the University of Oxford and UC-Santa Barbara. He joined our team in September 2023 with a postdoctoral contract and then obtained a prestigious Juan-de-la-Cierva fellowship from the Spanish Research Agency. His research explores whether and how mindfulness training affects executive function and mindwandering. He also leads the INMINDS interviews series. Laura Cepedo Amores | Laura works as a research assistant on a project using eyetracking measures to explore learning in visual search tasks. She is also completing her PhD at UAM under the supervision of Victoria Plaza and Pilar Aivar. For more information, visit her Google Scholar profile.

Ignacio Castillejo-Ruiz | Nacho obtained a MSc in Research Methods for the Behavioural and Health Sciences at UAM and then joined our team with an “Investigo” contract funded by regional government of Madrid. He now works on his PhD at UAM under an FPI-CM fellowship. His research focuses on the computational modeling of working memory with recurrent neural networks. Juan Gabriel Fernández | Juan is a secondary-school teacher at Colegio Virgen de Mirasierra, Madrid. He is also the author of an extremely popular blog and several books on evidence-based education. Alicia Franco-Martínez | Alicia obtained a MSc in Research Methods for the Behavioural and Health Sciences at UAM and then joined our team with an FPI fellowship from the Spanish Ministry for Science, Innovation, and Universities. Her research focuses on computational models of awareness and memory-guided visual search. She is also leading an international, multisite replication project on unconscious working memory. Francisco Garre-Frutos | Fran obtained a MSc in Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Granada and then obtained an FPU predoctoral fellowship. Guillermo Llaneza Fernández | Guillermo is conducting an internship in our research team to complete his BSc in Psychology at UAM. Simultaneously, he is pursuing a BSc in Brain Science at Maastricht University. His work focuses on neural network models of cognition.

Ricardo Rey-Sáez | Ricardo obtained a MSc in Research Methods for the Behavioural and Health Sciences at UAM and then joined our team with a contract funded by a grant from the Spanish Research Countil. Alejandro Sandoval-Lentisco | Alejandro obtained a master’s degree in Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Granada and completed his PhD at the University of Murcia, with short research stays at the University of Amsterdam and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität. He joined our team in 2025 with a contract funded by a grant from the Spanish Research Council. Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher under the supervision of John Ioannidis at METRICS, Stanford, but he will return to our team in 2026 with a Juan-de-la-Cierva fellowship. Han Bao | Han completed his Master’s degree in our team. His thesis explored how experience with visual search displays affects oculomotor measures of attention.

Carmelo P. Cubillas | Carmelo completed his PhD under the supervision of Helena Matute and myself in 2013. After a few years working for the private sector, he moved back to academia as a lecturer at UDIMA. He is currently an associate professor (profesor permanente laboral) at UAM. Marta Ferrero | Marta worked under my supervision as a postdoctoral researcher from 2017 to 2019. She then obtained a lecturership at Universidad Complutense de Madrid and eventually moved to UAM, where she is now an associate professor (profesor permanente laboral) and vice-dean for research at the School of Education. Pablo Garaizar | I cosupervised the PhD thesis of Pablo with Prof Diego López-de-Ipiña back in 2013, at the University of Deusto. Tamara Giménez-Fernández | I co-supervised the PhD thesis of Tamara with David Luque. David Hernández-Gutiérrez | David was a postdoctoral researcher in our lab between 2020 and 2022, before moving to the Basque Center for Cognition, Brain, and Language as a Juan-de-la-Cierva postdoctoral fellow. Rubén López-Nicolás | Rubén joined our team in February 2024 with a postdoctoral contract and was awarded a Juan-de-la-Cierta fellowship, which he eventually declined to join the University of Castilla-La Mancha as a lecturer.
